When considering any type of goose control program there are several factors that you need think about. Why are the geese there to begin with? Are they there because there are safe areas to nest? Is it because your property has water features? Do you have large areas of well-manicured grass for them to gaze on? Maybe your property doesnt have any water features, but a neighboring property does? The answers to these simple but vital questions will help a goose management professional design an effective plan. For instance.

Goose Dogs:

Goose dogs are great for properties that have water features. Geese see water as a safe place to go as most predators won’t try and swim after them. However, a properly trained goose dog will go into the water and swim after the geese. Goose dogs are also effective when trying to prevent geese from nesting in certain areas. Because the geese see the dogs as predators, many times if persistent hazing is applied the geese will often start to feel that the area isn’t safe and will choose a more secure spot to nest.

Turf applications and repellants:

Turf applications are great for areas with those well-manicured grassy buffets we mentioned earlier. They are also effective for your property if it neighbors a property with water. The application we use is applied monthly. It has a UV additive that the geese can see it but we cannot. When the geese feed on the grass that has been treated, they will begin to experience a heartburn like discomfort. This is completely safe for geese and has no long-term effect. Over the course of a couple days the geese learn that the funny looking grass gives them an upset stomach. This effectively removes their food source forcing them to go elsewhere to graze.

Nest depredation:

Nest Depredation has a very important role in goose control. 90% of the calls we get usually occur in March and April. This is the nesting period for the great Canada Goose. This period is when geese become extremely aggressive and territorial. Removing nests can alleviate these behaviors. Because geese return to where they hatch to nest once they hit maturity it is also beneficial to remove the nests to prevent future nesting years down the road.
